Chile
Chile is a strip of land
squeezed between the Andes and the Pacific, its 6435 km coastline being one
of the longest in the world for a country.
This extensive length that crosses many parallels give the country an extremely
variegated climate, from the desert and salt flats landscapes of the North,
to the snow capped volcanoes of the center and to the glaciers of the wilderness
of the South.
Santiago is a cosmopolitan city, the political and financial capital of the
country. Its marvelous location is conferred by the exquisite views over the
Andes Chain that can be seen from anywhere in the city but better from one
of the elevated parks located on top of the inside city hills.
Two hours away, a different feel has Valparaiso, a harbor sprawled over the
crescent of 42 hills. Admiring its panoramas you get the feeling that its
buildings covering the hills were thrown from the sky, the city having an
extremely bohemian atmosphere. Connected to the city is Vina del Mar, a resort
where are located many of the summer apartments for the well to do of Santiago.
The romance of the Far South Patagonia enchanted the minds of many for decades.
The large expanse of “nothing” can only challenge the imagination
that tries to force in stories. But beside the large expanse are the natural
wonders of the Patagonian Andes, from pristine glaciers and alpine lakes to
snow covered peaks and ancient forests, Patagonia representing one of the
worlds few remaining truly remote areas whose rugged beauty never stops to
intrigue you.
Punta Arenas still lives on its relatively recent history of “latifundia”
and sheepherders that became the mark of the region. The city is located on
the Magellan Strait and has many interesting buildings to visit and several
“pingunerias” around, but, no matter of all these, it still feels
closer to the end of the world, a very remote place.
Three hours north by bus, on the shore of the Canal Senoret, an arm of Las
Hope Sound, is located Puerto Natales. The city is the hub for travelers and
backpackers who congregate there for the last preparations before they leave
for Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. No matter what you’ve read about
the views of this park the surprise you’ll encounter there is grander.
The park is majestic, with turquoise glacier lakes, snow capped peaks, Patagonian
forest filled with the famous Calafate blueberries and lichens all over the
place. It is a place of primeval and pristine beauty that you cannot stop
loving when you walk its paths, even with the Patagonian brutal winds and
wildly weather change. But when you get a short spell of good weather and
the sky is blue the views are unmatchable, like in no other place I ever saw.
You can do a circuit in the park for 7 days or a shorter route, the famous
W, that will bring you to astoundingly beautiful places, like Grey Glacier,
Las Cuernos, Valle de Frances and more than anything the stupendous views
of Las Torres.
