Rajasthan
Rajasthan, land of the maharajas, cradle of spirituality, lair of legends is located in the northern part of India. The diversity and the exoticism of this place astound you no matter what you have visited before. It is a place where the reality and the mystique are twined together in an unbelievable weave, a place of strong traditions which hangs far away back in time, of a spirituality unmatched even by other old Asian traditions. Wherever you go, you encounter sadhus and gurus, you hear stories of chivalry talking about courage and valor, about holy sacrifices, about jauhars, you see the secluded zenanas where the women were living in purdha (isolation), the temples dedicated to women committing sati (self immolation) at their husbands death, a tradition passed through legends from Lord Shiva wife, Parvati, you encounter the whole pantheon of Indian gods who have temples dedicated to them, flooded day and night by thousands of worshippers, devotees like in no other place in the world. It is a place of dire contrasts, of richness and poverty cohabiting like in no other place, of astonishing palaces and bed laid in the streets, of fragrant gardens and acrid streets and markets, of desert and lakes, of very old customs surviving in modern times like the caste system that still has such a strong influence in the society. When you come back, you feel enriched by the culture you saw, by the numerous religions and sects you encounter, dealing casually with notions very afar from the western world like: moksha, dharma, chhatri, purdah, zenana, jauhar, brahmin, etc.
