Thailand
For many, Thailand is
"the" exotic destination, the place where you go to enjoy the most remote
experience, a symbol of "the far-east".
Bangkok, the oriental city, has it all; from its exquisite temples, hosting
Buddhas of all dimensions and styles epitomized by the famous reclining Buddha,
to the famous floating markets, still a symbol of Asia in spite of their recent
"touristy" look and feel, to the labyrinth of streets and "soys",
where the whole household life happens directly on the street, to the tranquil
evenings siping a drink on the banks of Chao Phra and not forgetting the backpackers
hangout at Khao Sarn Road, a world on a street, a travel hub in a city for
backpackers, Bangkok is bringing you a ceaseless stream of surprises.
Leaving Bangkok, you head
north to the old city of Ayuthaia, the first capital of Siam, a metropolis
in times when the present European capitals were mere villages. Ayuthaia is
a fantastic collection of Theravada Buddhist temples, most of them in ruins
after the city was sacked repeatedly by the Burmese troops hundreds of years
ago. North of Ayuthaia is Sukhotai, the next capital of the kingdom, a charming
and romantic place of ruined temples and tranquil lakes covered with lilies
near which serene and magnificent Buddha statues meditate.
Further up is the city of Chiang Mai, the capital of the La Na kingdom, housing
one of the most beautiful temple in Thailand, Wat Doi Sutep. Chiang Mai is
a charming place of hill tribes, of arts and crafts and of a dynamic and enticing
night market, . From there our travel video
brings you deep into The Golden Triangle, in the northern part of the country,
where three countries Laos, Myanmar and Thailand share borders and a lot of
traffic, a place that never had gold but it had poppy cultures that made a
lot of people extremely rich. Here, you can ride a boat on the Mekong river
and you can visit local Akka and Yao tribes, being able to cross into Burma
at Thatchlik.
Coming back south we stop to visit the interesting temple of Lampang and continuing
all the way east to the Khmer part of the country, close to the Cambodian
border, where we visit the sculpture and lintel embelished Khmer temples of
Kao Phanom Rung and Phimai. Further we opt for some relaxing days on the beaches
of Koh Samet, one of the famous islands of Thailand, before we hit the road
again, inching back towards Bangkok, to the western province of Rathchaburi,
where is one of the most interesting floating markets, a tradition and a symbol
for the country.
Watch this travel video and you will never forget these places.
