Burma-Golden Land

$29.95

A mesmerizing incursion in Myanmar, the land of golden spires.

Description

Burma: Golden Land: A mesmerizing 25 minutes travel over the entire land of the golden spires, Myanmar(Burma), taking the viewer to the temples of Bagan, the minorities of Inle Lake in the Shan States, to Mandalay and its surrounding imperial cities, the hanging rock of Kyaktiko and the spellbinding Shwedagon Paya in Rangoon, Yangon.

It is a mysterious country of many stark contradictions? A brutal military regime, the most welcoming people in Asia, a charismatic leader under house arrest for years, a deeply religious national spirit, and land covered in Golden Spires, a country thrust into the 21st Century, yet cities that seem frozen in time.

Myanmar, or Burma as it is more commonly known, is covered in gilded stupas, a sign of the religious devotion that drives its people, an inescapable fact that you’ll see in every place you visit. Statues of Buddha are abundant in temples and in caves; all being gilded in gold, a tradition dating from the 12th century.

The country’s self-imposed isolation also adds to this mysterious quality of Burma, which has very few tourists. In the countryside, people wear traditional costumes and in the cities, men wear longyis, a sarong-like dress. The buses bustling around the cities look like leftovers from colonial times. Even the famous hotel Strand in Yangon, run now by a Singapore conglomerate, still seem to drift in an ancient atmosphere.
